On 18 August 1960, Eisenhower Ordered DCI Dulles to Assassinate Prime Minister Lumumba

An outburst by President Eisenhower during an 18 August 1960 meeting of the National Security Council (NSC) was deleted from the minutes of the meeting by the man who recorded the minutes, Robert H. Johnson.  What he deleted was an order from Eisenhower to DCI Dulles to assassinate Prime Minister Lumumba.  The experience so traumatized Johnson over the years that he came forward voluntarily to the Church Committee to testify under oath that he had heard the order and how shocked he had been during the meeting.  He added, “It was not unusual to occasionally omit some particularly sensitive subject from the debriefing.”
